Emmanuel Ekon

Still basking in the euphoria of his victory at the April 9, 2011 polls, the member-elect for Abak Federal Constituency, Mr. Emmanuel Ekon has restated his commitment to fulfill his campaign promises within the four year period he would be in the National Assembly.

Mr. Ekon made the pledged in Uyo while fielding questions from newsmen shortly after he was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said he was fully committed to the people of Abak, Etim Ekpo and Ika for the overwhelming support which according to him resulted in his emerging victorious with a wide margin of 102,000 votes as against his opponent who scored a little over 1,000 votes.

Ekon explained that he was inspired by the trust and confidence which the people had in him pointing out that on the strength of this, he would try his best to ensure that the Federal Constituency receives its fair share of the national cake.

The member- elect who described the election as the best since Nigeria gained independence in 1960 urged the people to continue to rally round him in order for him to succeed in the task ahead. “There would be no time for frivolities when we assume office in June. The responsibility ahead is enormous. The just concluded election was the first step. We need the people to give us their inputs. This is a project that involves everybody from Abak, Etim Ekpo and Ika. We must work together if we are to succeed in our mission to make something out in the next four years,” he said.

The National Assembly member-elect expressed thanks to his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for giving him the opportunity to contest the election saying he would not have gotten to the present level if the party had not provided a level playing ground for all categories of people who had the interest of the people at heart.

He further gave kudos to the leader of the party and governor of the state, Chief Godswill Akpabio for his unprecedented performance which according to him gave the people the confidence to give the PDP another chance. “The victory we have recorded as a party is as a result of the performance of our dear governor who has been able to use the resources of the state to impact positively on the lives of the people within a period of four years. The party would not have done well if the governor did not perform to the satisfaction of the people and we are very optimistic that he would do more when he is re-elected,” he added.

While still urging the people to continue to vote for the PDP in subsequent elections, he appealed to his opponents to sink their differences and join forces with him to make meaningful contributions to the development of Abak Federal Constituency and the state in general.

He described some of them as members of the PDP who were led astray by politicians with selfish interest adding that the time for them to return back home was now. “We have work to do and I know that some of them took a wrong decision against their will. We are going to run an open door policy where no one would be victimized for his or her actions. The election was merely a family affair. Even my opponent has congratulated me. This shows that we were not at war and we intend to keep it that way,” he said.
